A New World Part 17 – “Parting Glass” (end of the Year)

Italian Version

Part 16 here

The evening of the New Year’s Eve had arrived, the people were all celebrating, in the city many met, there was carefree, hope, expectation for the new year.

The eraculator had another kind of thought: he wanted the new year to be literally the launching pad towards everything that SHOULD be.

A new self, a new life, a new world.

Starting from all those things that made him feel good, and abandoning those that hurt, and also people, and situations.

He didn’t want to “fix” anything or anyone, he just wanted to leave, he just wanted to be built. In life you don’t have to “solve problems”, but you have to find a way to be happy.

It was snowing, slightly in the city, the man still decided to go out, despite the snow, it didn’t seem too cold: it was light, fine, almost warm.

The city was full of people, someone laughed, someone ran, and somehow the young man felt a bit of nostalgia, for something he hadn’t felt for a long time. Was it perhaps the hope and expectation of a new year? How long has it been since it seemed that everything was always the same?

At one point, he heard singing. Some men in the street played a splendid melody:

“Of all the money that e’er I had

I spent it in good company

And all the harm I’ve ever done

Alas it was to none but me … “

He approached, he saw a group of elegantly dressed men, happily singing that song, in which he was deeply reflected, that was the feeling he felt at that end of the year.

A farewell glass, but something sweet, not drastic, something like that light snow.

Something that existed and had long been known to come.

The young man knew one thing, that every rebirth still needs a “death”, and he looked her in the face, in fact he knew that his old self was becoming food for the worms.

“So fill to me the parting glass

And drink a health whate’er befall,

And gently rise and softly call

Good night and joy be to you all “

He felt that something was ending, and that this song was the best way to say goodbye.

Certainly, many people had disappointed him, he still felt lost, and with the desire to go away, and despite all the anger, despite all the hatred, although he had never managed to solve some things, to make someone stay with him. , and … not to change some things, not to be understood, to listen … In the end he was still grateful and happy.

We see that those pleasant moments spent with those people were the only ones in his life, there would be no second chance, and he sighed with bitter and nostalgic resignation.

“Of all the comrades that e’er I had

They’re sorry for my going away

And all the sweethearts that e’er I had

They’d wish me one more day to stay

But since it falls unto my lot

That I should rise and you should not

I gently rise and softly call

Good night and joy be to you all “

The heraculator, then, took a glass of wine, which was given to a stall, and while he listened to them, he raised it towards that group.

And they, they did the same with their mugs of beer, while they continued to play.

They invited him to stay with them, and they began to sing, drink and play together …

The sadness finally seemed to go away, slowly, from the man, who had, after all, made the decision in the depths of his heart, about what and who should be in the new year.

“A man may drink and not be drunk

A man may fight and not be slain

A man may court a pretty girl

And perhaps be welcomed back again

But since it has so ought to be

By a time to rise and a time to fall

Come fill to me the parting glass

Good night and joy be with you all

Good night and joy be with you all “

Happy New Year.
